Following a robust, short Thanksgiving week for U.S. stocks, an extensive lineup of economic indicators and corporate earnings is anticipated.
November's private sector payroll data may be a significant highlight, although market analysts will need to wait until later in December for the government's latest monthly jobs report, which has been postponed due to the government shutdown. Additional reports on consumer credit and sentiment, as well as new data on the manufacturing and services sectors, are also expected.
Several major technology firms, including Salesforce, a leader in customer relationship management software, cybersecurity provider CrowdStrike, and Marvell Technology, are scheduled to release their earnings this week. Reports from Dollar Tree and Dollar General may offer insights into consumer spending trends.
Cyber Monday Sales and Sentiment Data Highlight Consumer Trends
This week holds significant importance for American retailers, with online sales from the five-day period spanning Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday projected to reach $78 billion, as reported by Salesforce.
On Friday, data releases are anticipated to provide insight into consumer sentiment, with the University of Michigan's initial consumer sentiment survey for December. Additionally, the Federal Reserve’s consumer credit report, also expected on Friday, could reveal the extent of debt accumulation among American shoppers.
While new data on private payrolls will be available this week, investors will need to wait until December 16 for the government's next monthly jobs report, following its delay. The private-sector ADP employment report, scheduled for Wednesday, follows a stronger-than-expected report in October.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is set to speak on Monday evening, amid increasing optimism about a potential rate cut during the central bank's upcoming meeting.
Major Software Companies and Dollar Stores Announce Earnings
Salesforce’s earnings report on Wednesday could further energize interest in AI investments, following the company's robust revenue forecast indicating strong demand for its AI products. Additionally, results from Marvell Technology, a provider of custom semiconductor solutions, MongoDB, a database provider, and data storage firm Pure Storage are anticipated to reflect increased demand driven by AI advancements.
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike is set to report on Tuesday following its better-than-anticipated forecast for annual recurring revenue in the previous quarter. Security firms Snowflake and Okta are also scheduled to release their reports this week. Additionally, results from dollar stores Dollar Tree and Dollar General may provide further insights into changing consumer preferences.
